Peanut Butter Recall Expands To Pet Food

Salmonella Infection Numbers Still Rising
By JULIE JARGON
The peanut butter recall that has affected cookies, crackers and other food is now extending to some pet food.
PetSmart is recalling seven of its Great Choice Dog Biscuit products that contain peanut paste made by Peanut Corp. of America, the Virginia-based company that's the focus of a Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of the peanut butter and paste made at its Blakely, Ga., facility.
So far, the salmonella outbreak has sickened 485 people in 43 states and Canada and may have contributed to six deaths.
PetSmart said isn't aware of any cases of pets becoming ill from the products but has removed them from its store shelves and website and is conducting the recall as a precautionary measure.
The recalled products include packages ranging in size from 32 ounces to 10 pounds, sold between Aug. 21, 2008, and Jan. 19, 2009.
The FDA has said consumers should avoid eating food containing peanut butter unless they know it isn't linked to Peanut Corp. The FDA's Web site has a list of products known to contain peanut butter or peanut paste supplied by Peanut Corp. (Read more from the FDA.)

Peanut Butter Salmonella Recall Expanded

AboutLawsuits.com
News and Information about Personal Injury Lawsuits
An initial peanut butter recall issued last week for large tubs of peanut butter potentially contaminated with Salmonella, was expanded over the weekend to include peanut paste made at the same manufacturing plant. This paste may have been used by a number of different manufacturers in products like peanut butter crackers, cookies, cakes and ice cream.
Health officials indicate that a recent salmonella food poisoning outbreak, which has surfaced over the past four months, appears to be linked to peanut butter manufactured at a Georgia processing plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America.
Product samples have tested positive for Salmonella typhimurium, which is the same strain of bacteria that has been identified in over 400 people who have been sickened in at least 43 states.
According to a peanut butter recall notice issued by Peanut Corporation of America on January 13, 2009, 21 lots of large 5 pound to 50 pound containers of peanut butter sold through distributors to schools, hospitals, nursing homes and other food service providers were recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.
At that time, the manufacturer indicated that none of the peanut butter recalled was being sold directly to consumers through retail stores.
On January 18, 2009, the Peanut Corporation of America recall was expanded to include peanut paste manufactured at the same Georgia processing plant. The peanut paste, which is a concentrated product containing ground, roasted peanuts, was sold to manufacturers of a variety of different products that contain peanut butter.
On Sunday and Monday, a number of different manufacturers who sold products containing peanut butter which may have come from paste produced by Peanut Corporation of America issued recalls of their own. Some of the recalls include variations of:
* Austin Peanut Butter Crackers
* Keebler Peanut Butter Crackers
* Famous Amos Peanut butter Cookies
* Keebler Peanut Butter Cookies
* Perry’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt
* Shurfine Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream
* Wegmans Peanut Butter Ice Cream
* Little Debbie Peanut Butter Crackers
* South Bend Chocolate and Fudge with Peanut Butter
* Food Lion Peanut Butter Cookies
* Lofthouse Peanut Butter Cookies
* Chuck’s Chunky Peanut Butter Cookies
* Pastries Plus Gourmet Cookies
* Wal-Mart Peanut Butter Cookies
Given the growing number of products being recalled and the difficulty identifying which products may contain contaminated peanut butter with salmonella, the FDA is urging consumers to avoid eating any commercially-prepared products with peanut butter or peanut butter served at hospitals, nursing homes, schools or other institutional food service locations.
Peanut butter salmonella food poisoning could result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps, with symptoms often appearing within 12 to 72 hours and lasting from 4 to 7 days.
While most healthy adults recover without substantial long-term complications, young children, older individuals and those with a weak immune system could be at a greater risk of serious infection, which may result in hospitalization or even death if not treated promptly.
Consumers who believe that they may have peanut butter products that were recalled can contact the manufacturer for additional information.
Food poisoning attorneys who are investigating and reviewing potential peanut butter salmonella lawsuits have recommended that any individuals who have been sickened by a peanut butter product preserve and store any uneaten portions for future testing. The products should be stored in a manner to prevent further consumption.

Don't Eat the Peanut Butter...FDA warns

CNN) -- Federal officials are urging consumers to put off eating foods that contain peanut butter until they can be they are sure they do not contain products manufactured by the Peanut Corp. of America, some of which were found to contain salmonella.
Food and Drug Administration officials said Saturday that peanut butter and peanut paste made from ground roasted peanuts, manufactured in Peanut Corp.'s Blakely, Georgia, plant were found to contain the bacteria, although a direct link to the strain that has now sickened 474 people in 43 states has not been found.
Six deaths may have been connected to this salmonella outbreak.
Peanut Corp. announced an expanded recall of peanut butter and peanut paste produced from its Georgia plant Friday night. Peanut Corp. doesn't directly supply to supermarkets, so brand-name peanut butters are not expected to be affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Instead, Peanut Corp. sells produce in bulk. The peanut butter is sold by in containers from 5 to 1,700 pounds. Peanut paste is sold in sizes from 35-pound containers to tankers.
The peanut paste is used in the manufacturing of cakes, candies, crackers, cookies and ice cream, FDA officials say.
Minnesota and Connecticut health officials have confirmed salmonella Typhimurium linked to this outbreak in bulk containers found in institutions such as prisons, schools and nursing homes.
The FDA is urging companies that make these foods to check whether they use peanut butter or paste produced by the company. The recalled peanut butter was manufactured on or after August 8, 2008; the peanut paste was produced on or after September 26, 2008.
The administration is urging companies to notify consumers if the products they manufacture may contain peanut products from Peanut Corp. It is also urging companies whose products do not contain Peanut Corp. peanut butter or paste to make that information available to the public.
The Kellogg Co. announced a voluntary recall of 16 products, including Keebler and Famous Amos peanut butter cookies, because they contain peanut butter that could be connected to Peanut Corp.
Peanut Corp. products are also distributed by King Nut Co., which voluntarily recalled its products a week ago.
"The majority of products [like cookies, crackers, ice cream] are manufactured with products that don't come from PCA," said Dr. Stephen Sundlof, the FDA's director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
However, until people can be sure that the peanut cookies or crackers they have do not contain product from Peanut Corp., the FDA is asking consumers to hold off on eating them.
CNN's Miriam Falco contributed to this report.

Does the New Earth Conflict with Christianity?
All seemed to get off to a good start, but then 30 minutes into the program, I personally had problems with the sputtering and stuttering of the production. Oprah posed some very good questions to Tolle as to how he went about writing something that has been a book that has touched so many in such a compelling manner. One of the first points covered was Tolle stating that one needs to ask what life wants from you as an individual....not what life can give the individual. This is the first step in realizing your life's purpose.
Tolle also addressed the issue as to if this book would be in conflict with what Christians believed. Tolle said as long as you focus your religion on a deeper level there should be no conflict.
The message said to check back tomorrow on Oprah.com to get a download of the event in its entirety.
